As Crimea held a referendum to break away from Ukraine and join Russia, the restive Russian majority in the eastern industrial region of Ukraine began to agitate for cessation too. Donetsk, Ukraine’s fifth-largest city, became a focal point for pro-Russian protestors. In March 2014, those protests turned violent, sparking the ongoing low-level secession battle that threatens to turn into a full-blown war.
