Born Free Generation

Asandiswa Makapela is 20 years old and lives in Langa Township in Cape Town with her brother and her sister in law and their two children in their one-room home. Asandiswa finished school with very high marks and is trying to get a bursary so she can study teaching at university. “I feel like a lot of change has been brought about since Apartheid because back then people were not allowed to go to white schools, women had to sit at home and look after babies and cook. Now women go work, they are in high positions they are valued a lot. Black kids can go to white schools and we can even communicate with white people.” Alexia Webster/The Stand
