Armenia, Faces of Poverty

Nuneh Zakaryan lives with her three children in a run-down house with a stove and three iron bed frames but no mattresses or bedding. The walls of the house are blackened with soot. Nuneh has had several heart attacks and is unable to work. Her husband left their family and moved to Russia. Nuneh’s eldest son, Vova, 16, has dropped out of school and is the family’s breadwinner. Vova describes his work day like this, “I knock on every door, go to the houses of the rich and ask them what kind of work they need to be done. I can dig trenches for water lines, I can carry stones and concrete, I can work in the orchard or sell flowers.” Getap village, 2009. Sara Anjargolian/The Stand
