Armenia, Faces of Poverty

The Zakaryan family home. Nuneh Zakaryan lives with her three children in this run-down house with only a stove and three iron bed frames but no mattresses or bedding. The walls of the house are blackened with soot. The family’s eldest son, Vova, 16, stopped attending school and became the family’s sole breadwinner. His father left the family and his mother Nuneh is sick. The family has no resources to live on three to four dollars Vova makes daily doing odd jobs for neighbors. Child labor is becoming a widespread problem in Armenia as impoverished families are withdrawing their children from school and sending them in search of work. Getap village, Armenia, 2009.
