Armenia, Faces of Poverty

Susanna Karapetyan, 53, lives with her husband Arthur and their daughter Anna in a hut made of metal rods wrapped in plastic sheeting and covered with pieces of cloth and rags. When it rains, the hut leaks incessantly and the family must wear galoshes inside their home. Susanna treks several kilometers to a nearby garbage dump daily to pick out bits of metal, glass and other salvageable items. This is the primary source of income for the family. Susanna’s daughter Anna, 12, dropped out of school because the family did not have enough money to pay for school clothes and books. Shahumyan village, Etchmiadzin, 2009. Sara Anjargolian/The Stand
