When We Left Our Water

Tyson Mupande holds his axe to illustrate his Tonga heritage. Tyson comes from Simbala, near Kamativi. Tyson missed out on education as a child because there was no school in his area but took advantage of Robert Mugabe’s free education policy in the 1980s to attend primary school. He was fortunate to be trained in anti-poaching at Kavira Forest on the Zambezi River and was then transferred to a private game reserve in Victoria Falls in 1998. Tyson supports 11 people on his monthly salary of $230. Davina Jogi/The Stand
