Corn or mielie stalks that are burnt for warmth surround the initiates hut or lodge at HaMohlokaqala village in western Lesotho as villagers wait for the thirty four boys to return as men after undergoing a gruelling traditional four month initiation process Dec 10, 1999. The blankets they wore throughout the period are gathered for washing in front of the hut – today they will where new blankets. (Greg Marinovich)
