Somali refugees in Italy

In by admin

Mohammed Elmi arrived in Italy with his bride and three children in June 2003 after a flight from Mogadishu to Tripoli and a three-day boat trip to Sicily. He received a one-year humanitarian residence permit and immediately started taking Italian lessons and searching for a job. He found a job in another village and the Caritas Association, the reception centre where he was living, helped him and his family find a place to stay near his work. When his employment contract ended he became the keeper of a shelter for refugees in Varese where he now works and lives with his family. Varese, Italy. July 2011. Lorenzo Masi/The Stand
