Warriors from the Rez: Defending their own land

A tattoo reads Brotherhood of American Indians on the back of Vietnam war veteran Carl Sun Bear at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. The picture was taken a few days after he was released from prison where he spent 6 years for killing one of his fellow drinkers. Pine Ridge is a dry reservation but one of the biggest problems there is alcoholism. Carl lives in a trailer next to the famous Wounded Knee cemetery with his wife, 11 children and two grandchildren. To suppliment their $600 state income, the family makes handmade beadwork and dream-catchers which they sell to the few tourists who visit the historical site. Svetlana Bachevanova/The Stand
