John Old Horse (center) at the Veterans' Pow Wow in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He carries a staff made from a sword, an Iraqi flag captured in an assault on an Iraqi police station and a checkered scarf taken from a dead Al Qaeda member. "When I signed on to go to Iraq, it was the Lakota way to be like our ancestors, (and) it was American because I wanted to be like Rambo." He is the third generation Old Horse to serve the US military. He came back from Iraq a different man with severe PTSD, but has turned his life around, earning a bachelors degree in Lakota studies.
