The Rez – Home of the Lakota Nation

A deteriorating mural depicts the face of an Indian shedding a tear painted on the wall of a house in Oelrich, SD, near the border with the Pine Ridge Reservation. The image is believed by some to be that of Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull was a holy man, killed by police on the Standing Rock Reservation during an attempt to arrest him and prevent him from supporting the Ghost Dance movement. Murals depicting hunters and buffalo and an idealized Sioux past are common around the Rez. Svetlana Bachevanova/The Stand
